Gardening Health and Nutrition

Gardening, Health and Nutrition

Our gardening project engages children’s senses through hands-on learning experiences and inquiry-based exploration.

We expose them to the importance of organic produce and the business of gardening (one of the ways of making an income – making homemade natural plant dyes).

We build bridges with the wider community by facilitating networking and collaboration among local school food garden practitioners (Mam’Refilwe Urban City Farm).

We have an ongoing relationship with Tony Bensusan who is the head gardener at Victoria Yards as he teaches the kids about gardening and when we do our baking and food sessions we go to him to source our herbs and veggies so that the kids know and understand the source of their food.

Our goal is to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition with our Safe Study community. Through our food-associated programs, we are teaching them to grow their food and make use of food resources around them to create meals. We have collaborated with Mama Refilwe’s urban city farm

and The People’s Pantry to create channels for sustainable food solutions and achieve food security for our Safe Study children and their families.  We’ve been working with themes such as ‘where does your food come from?’, a collaboration between The People’s Pantry and Mam Refilwe’s Urban Farm.

The goal of life is living in agreement with nature.
