The vision and dedication behind Safe Study
Georgina Bennett started Safe Study because she is passionate about education and helping children in South Africa.
Whilst working at the Victoria Yards community soup kitchen with Lungile Hlatshwayo, she would see the same children every day who were bored and had not heard from their schools since the start of the pandemic.
Seeing a need to stimulate these children and encourage them to continue learning, she started handing out worksheets, with the promise that if the children completed them, she’d bring more the next soup kitchen day.
A week in, Lungi and Georgina had over 40 children who were desperate to learn. They decided to act and create a safe learning environment within Victoria Yards to hold weekly classes.
With a background in branding and communications, Georgina co-founded Safe Study and combined with Lungi’s social work experience and knowledge in running after-school programs, they got it up and running, often holding classes in the outside space of Victoria Yards and the neighbouring parks.
She continues to run the social media, and website and handle fundraising initiatives and administration.
Sustaining relationships with families and other figures like creatives and makers on the ground, and making sure children’s voices in the community are heard, valid and valued.
With long-term experience in administration and delivery of socio-creative and social justice initiatives to strengthen the levels of social cohesion and equity in our poor education system. One of her passion is self-care for the investment in mental health by providing socio-emotional well-being for children and young people to be well and woke. Applying a holistic approach to supplementing and complementing our education system.
